Okay so I spent literally hours comparing home decor stores trying to figure out where to actually buy stuff for my house.
Like I’d open one tab with Wayfair, another with IKEA, another with Target, and I’d be looking at the same lamp on three different sites with three completely different prices. And I’m sitting there confused about which one to actually buy from.
That’s when I realized most people probably have no idea which store is actually best for different types of home decor shopping. We just kind of default to whatever we’ve heard of or wherever we’ve shopped before.
But they’re actually really different stores with different strengths and weaknesses.
I’ve ordered from all three of them multiple times now and I’ve learned what each one is actually good at. And when I should shop somewhere else entirely.
Wayfair is best for furniture selection and price. IKEA is best for budget-friendly small decor and assembly-required furniture. Target is best for quick delivery and everyday home items. Choose based on what you’re buying and how fast you need it.
When you’re shopping for home decor online you’re basically choosing between three different shopping experiences.
Wayfair is this massive furniture and home decor warehouse basically. They have everything. Like seriously everything. If you can imagine a piece of home decor, Wayfair probably has it in multiple styles and price points.
IKEA is Swedish furniture brand that’s famous for affordable furniture you assemble yourself. They have a specific aesthetic. They’re budget-friendly. They’re very predictable.
Target is a general retailer but they’ve gotten really good at home decor lately. They have their own brand. They have partnerships with designers. They’re fast shipping because they have physical stores.
The way you shop at each one is totally different. The experience is different. What you’ll find is different.
So let me actually break down what I’ve learned shopping at each one.
Wayfair is honestly where I go when I’m looking for furniture or specific home decor items that I can’t find anywhere else.
Like I was looking for a very specific size credenza for my bedroom. I looked at Target and IKEA and they didn’t have anything close. I went to Wayfair and found like fifteen options in my exact size range.
The selection is genuinely massive. You can search by style (modern, farmhouse, bohemian, whatever). You can search by color. You can search by price range. You can filter by size. It’s incredibly specific.
The prices vary wildly. You can find cheap furniture and you can find expensive furniture. But generally Wayfair has competitive pricing, especially if you look at their sale items (which is constantly).
Shipping is where Wayfair is sometimes annoying. Because they’re a marketplace with lots of sellers, shipping times vary. Some items ship from Wayfair directly (fast). Some ship from third-party sellers (slower). Some items ship from the manufacturer (slowest).
You have to read the shipping info carefully or you might think you’re getting something in two days and it actually takes two weeks.
I ordered a coffee table from Wayfair once and didn’t pay attention to the shipping timeframe. Thought it would arrive in a week. It took three weeks because it was coming from the manufacturer.
Now I always check shipping before I buy.
The return policy is decent. Usually 30 days. But you have to initiate the return yourself and some items are a pain to return if they’re large.
I love Wayfair for finding exactly what I’m looking for when other stores don’t have it. The selection is unbeatable.
The downside is you have to be careful about shipping and sometimes prices aren’t as good as they seem if you factor in shipping costs.
IKEA is the opposite of Wayfair in a lot of ways.
IKEA has a very specific aesthetic. They’re Swedish minimalism. Clean lines. Simple designs. You know what you’re getting.
Their prices are genuinely cheap. Like you can get a bookshelf for €40 that looks fine and works. Or a nightstand for €30. Or a dresser for €60.
The trade-off is the furniture quality is basically what you pay for. It’s cheap furniture. It will work fine for a few years but it’s not an investment piece. It’s functional.
Assembly is required for most things. And like… it’s fine? It’s not hard. It takes time but it’s fine. I’ve assembled a bunch of IKEA stuff and it’s honestly usually pretty straightforward.
Their small decor items (pillows, frames, vases, that kind of thing) are really good value. Like a nice throw pillow is €15. A picture frame is €5. Stuff is affordable.
Shipping is fast because IKEA has warehouses and they ship quickly.
Returns are easy. You can return stuff for 365 days. That’s generous.
What IKEA is NOT good for: if you want unique furniture or specific styles, IKEA isn’t it. They have limited options. If you want durability and long-lasting furniture, IKEA isn’t ideal.
But if you want affordable furniture that works and looks okay? IKEA is great.
I use IKEA for stuff like shelving, small furniture pieces, and decor items. I don’t use them for like… my main couch or bed because I want those to last.
Target is interesting because they’re not primarily a furniture store but they’ve become really good at home decor.
Target’s home section is mostly smaller decor items, bedding, organizational stuff, lighting. They have some furniture but it’s limited.
What Target is really good at is fast shipping. Like you can order something online and pick it up in store the same day or next day. Or they ship it fast.
Prices are mid-range. Not cheap like IKEA. Not as varied as Wayfair. Just middle ground.
Their house brand stuff (Threshold, Good & Gather, etc) is actually decent quality. Like their bedding is comfortable. Their throw pillows are nice. Their artwork is fine.
The selection is limited compared to Wayfair but it’s curated better. Like Target picked things that actually go together aesthetically. It’s an easier shopping experience because you’re not overwhelmed with options.
Returns are stupid easy. You can return stuff to the store or online. 90 days for most things.
What Target is NOT good for: specific furniture pieces, large sofas, finding exactly what you want. They just don’t have the variety.
What Target IS good for: quick shopping, fast delivery, bedding, pillows, decor accessories, home organization stuff.
I shop at Target when I need something fast or when I’m buying small decor items.
For furniture: Wayfair. Best selection. Most options. You’ll find what you’re looking for.
For budget furniture: IKEA. Cheap and fine quality.
For quick delivery: Target. Pick up in store or fast shipping.
For bedding: Target or Wayfair depending on style. Target for basic stuff. Wayfair for specific styles.
For decor accessories (pillows, frames, vases): IKEA or Target. Both affordable. Both fast.
For large purchases (couches, beds, dining tables): Wayfair. Biggest selection.
For affordable overall home setup: IKEA. Cheapest.
For convenience: Target. Easy returns. Fast shipping. Physical stores nearby.
Here’s how I actually shop now after learning the differences.
If I know exactly what I want, I check all three to see who has it and what price.
If I’m looking for furniture and don’t know what I want, I start with Wayfair because the selection is biggest and they have inspiration galleries.
If I want something fast, I go to Target.
If I’m furnishing on a budget, I do IKEA for basics and Target for decor.
If I need something specific or unique, Wayfair is the only one that will have it.
I’ve learned that each store serves a different purpose. I’m not loyal to one. I shop based on what I’m buying and what I need.
Not always. IKEA is cheaper for basic furniture like bookshelves and storage. Wayfair has more options at all price points so you might find cheaper items on Wayfair for specific things, but overall IKEA is the budget option.
IKEA has a 365-day return policy which is actually longer than Target’s 90 days. Both are easy to return. IKEA you can return to store or online.
Depends. Some items ship free. Some have shipping costs. You have to check per item. It’s annoying that it varies so much.
None of them are super high quality. Wayfair has the widest range including high-quality options. IKEA is budget quality. Target is mid-range. It depends what you buy.
Yes, all three run sales and coupons regularly. Target coupons are easiest to access through their app.
Honestly, the best approach is using all three stores for different purposes.
Shop Wayfair when you need variety and selection. Shop IKEA when you need budget-friendly basics. Shop Target when you need fast delivery and small decor items.
Don’t get stuck thinking one store is “the best.” They’re all good at different things.
The store that’s best for you depends on what you’re buying and what matters to you (price, selection, speed, quality, etc).
I shop at all three regularly and honestly I’m happiest when I’m using each one for what it does best.
